Do Your Blinds Make Your Home Look Better Or Worse?

Every aspect of a home has a way that it can be decorated. Walls can get a coat of paint or wallpaper. Some furniture makes a room more inviting. When it comes to the windows, blinds can provide them with beauty.

While most people focus on the appearance of blinds, they also serve a pretty useful function. Blinds allow a person to control internal environmental features. Bright days that might have a lot of glare from the windows can be blocked out. Blinds can keep homes from getting too hot due to direct sunshine on the windows. This can result in savings on energy bills. Blinds also can provide privacy from unwanted people staring into your home. A good set of blinds is surprisingly multi purpose. But what makes a good set of blinds?

Types of Blinds For Your Home

One of the good things about blinds is the sheer quantity of styles that are available. There’s a huge amount of choice and that means you can find a good type of blind for any room or window. Some of the main types of blinds include:

  • Wooden Blinds - Wooden blinds are unsurprisingly made of wood and can rotate from a fully closed appearance to something that lets in quite a bit of light.
  • Roller Blinds - These blinds are very simple. They unspool from a roll at the top to cover the window as much as is wanted. The downside to roller blinds is they tend to allow in a few shafts of light on the edges of the blind if recessed into the window.
  • Venetian Blinds - One of the most well known and popular styles is venetian. The standard horizontal slats found in so many types of blinds are instead joined with fabric. These fabric sections are known as “tapes” and allow for some level of transparency even when the blind is closed.
  • Roman Blinds - These blinds use a cascading fabric. When they are raised or lowered, the fabric folds back in on itself. It’s an interesting design that can add a different look to many rooms.
  • Vertical Blinds - Quite simply, vertical blinds have the slats in a vertical pattern instead of a horizontal tone. These blinds can turn to allow light in. Often vertical blinds can retract to one side allowing for full vision through a window. Tall vertical blinds are often used on large sliding glass doors.
  • Full Darkness Blinds - These blinds are typically intended as a way to keep sunlight out for people as they sleep. These blinds are great for people who have to work night shifts, or who don’t appreciate sunrise hitting them straight in the face each morning.
  • Shutters - This is a very rustic look that originally came from southern plantations. The blinds are wooden shutters that can be opened or closed through a long central plank.
  • Electric Blinds - These motorized blinds allow people to let light in with the touch of a button. Good sets of electric blinds may also take advantage of smart technology, working through a phone or voice commands.

It may sound weird, but the first thing that should come to mind when choosing a style for your blinds is function, not appearance. You want to make sure that the blinds will block out the right amount of light. Venetian blinds for example are fantastic for getting rid of direct sunlight. However, they do let in a large amount of natural light! This is perfect for a low light room, but perhaps not ideal for a bedroom. Rooms with a lot of water should use products that can’t fade or become contaminated. Bathrooms should avoid linen blinds.

When picking a design, you want to accentuate the designs already prevalent in a room. A rustic kitchen requires rustic window blinds. Modern looks need modern styles. Color wise, window blinds usually are an accent or secondary color piece. In the living room, try matching the blinds to the couch, rather than the walls.

The final design tip revolves around measurements. You want to be as exact as possible with blinds, as a small gap can make a big difference when it comes to light. Measurements should be in millimeters rather than inch fractions. It’s a small thing that can make a huge difference once the blind is mounted.
