There are plenty of men who try to avoid wearing proper winter clothing. They have a style, so what’s a little cold weather when you look great right? It’s foolish! You don’t need to sacrifice style to be cold all the time. Just make sure you have the right gear for winter and then find the good style from there.

But what do you need to winter? There’s two main classifications really. Outerwear counts items you specifically put on when you’re going outside, but take off as soon as you’re back indoors. This can include coats, jackets, vests, hats, etc. The rest of winter wear is worn normally. It can be especially useful if you like to save some money on your furnace. Set the temperature a few degrees lower and wear some great winter options instead! What follows are some of the most important things needed in a man’s closet for winter.

1 - The Parka

First off, you need to accept that it’s probably going to get very cold at some point during winter depending on where you live. A proper parka will keep you warm and fight the elements. Down parkas are stylish and incredibly warm. Most parkas use a synthetic option now, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. They keep you warm, and that’s the most important thing when the weather dips below freezing! Parkas can be expensive. They can run from around $100 up to around $800 if you’re feeling like a little luxury.

2 - Flannel Shirts

Whether you’re getting the shirt itself, or a shit jacket style, flannel is great for winter. Flannel is a naturally warm material that can keep the cold away. Another benefit to the flannel shirt is that you can wear an appropriate jacket over top of it. Sometimes this means you can ditch the parka and go with something a little bit lighter. This is especially useful when you want to head out for the evening socially. Admittedly, plaid stripes can get boring, but there are other options if you’re willing to search.

3 - Tech Gloves

Gloves are important to keep your hands warm. However, that’s not all we need anymore. People who use a smartphone needs to buy a pair of gloves that will allow them to access their phone in cold temperatures. You don’t want to miss an important call because you’re struggling to get your gloves off in time. A pair of tech friendly leather gloves will be professional looking while also activating the touch screen of a smartphone. Luxurious leather gloves can get up to around $150. More affordable options can use faux leather and run closer to $25.

4 - Layering Sweaters

Your sweater is often the key to your winter weather clothing. Layering clothing means that you can add or subtract depending on your current location. In many cases, the sweater is the most you’ll wear when you’re inside. Since that’s the case, you want to find sweaters that look good, but are also comfortable. The best thing about sweaters is there is seemingly an infinite amount of different styles and materials that can be used. Whether you’re picking wool or cashmere, you’ll find something that looks good and keeps you warm.

5 - Long Underwear

Okay, so many people consider long underwear to be something of a joke. But the reality is that a pair of long underwear is incredibly effective at helping you stay warm when you’re going to be outside for an extended period of time. If you take advantage of winter activities like skiing, hiking or snowshoeing, then you probably already know just how great a pair of long underwear is. You can get affordable long underwear for around $25 that fit comfortably under your jeans anytime.
