A person’s bed can feel like the safest place in their home. Slipping into bed after a long day can feel like the weight of the world is removed from a person’s shoulders. Your pajamas should contribute to that wonderful feeling. Pajamas are about comfort. You should feel like you can sleep easily. Different styles of pajamas can perform differently for you. If you live somewhere warm, you need them to help keep you cool. If you live somewhere cold, then you want pajamas to help keep you warm. They can be utilitarian or designed to help entice your partner to evening fun. In the end, there are numerous different styles that are worn by both men, women or both. What follows are some of the most classic styles of pajamas.

1 - Two Piece Garments

This continues to be the most common form of men’s sleepwear, but is also popular with some women. The pants are held by a drawstring or an elastic waistband and are full length. The upper body option is of a shirt that is buttoned up. Buttons may seem an odd choice for pajamas, but they are certainly a traditional one. This type of pajama can be made of essentially any type of material. Cotton and silk are popular, but satin, linen or polyester can also be used. These type of pajamas can also be embellished somewhat. Some embroidered initials or a personal family crest are often added.

2 - Night Shirts

In the past, the night shirt was worn by both men and women. However, that’s the far past now. The night shirt is typically worn by men who are trying to get that wonderful Christmas time “Scrooge” look. A night shirt is essentially a very long shirt that is open at the bottom. This can create a bit of a breeze from below while walking, but the goal is for them to be incredibly light and soft. This means that they are typically made from cotton or linen. Men who aren’t used to the nightshirt should probably wear something beneath them as long as other people are around.

3 - Nightgowns

The nightgown is an incredibly popular style of pajamas that is primarily worn by women. The nightgown tends to be loose hanging to avoid being binding. Nightgowns are similar to nightshirts, but have a bit more flair to them. Nightgowns can be made from a wide variety of different materials. Silk and satin nightgowns are rather common and can feel rather luxurious. Aside from these materials, cotton and linen are common. They make for incredibly comfortable nightgowns.

4 - Onesies

Both men and women can enjoy the glory of the onesie. As the name suggests, the onesie is a continuous single piece article of clothing which runs from feet to neck. There are different variations on the onesie. They may or may not include feet. A onesie will button up from the front, or might use a zipper. In addition, there is often a flap for a person’s behind. This ensures that night time trips to the washroom won’t become frustrating affairs of removing your entire pajamas. Wearing a onesie can be very warm. They are often made of flannel or terry cloth, so there’s no chance of feeling too cold.

5 - Negligees

Typically, this form of pajamas is used by women. This form of pajama is made of partially translucent or sheer materials and fabrics. Of all of the pajama styles on this list, by far, this has the biggest chance of being uncomfortable due to design. While they are usually loose and sensuous to the touch, they are often made with extra flourishes like lace or bows. Negligees can be designed for simple use, or they can be designed to produce interest from the wearer’s partner in some nighttime adventures. Negligees can be worn on their own or may also be worn with underwear.
