Headphones allow you to listen to music at home without bothering other people. They allow you to listen to music on the go from a music player or phone while you’re moving around. Another use of headphones is in business. The modern office is no longer restricted to a single room. People can be working in many different locations or while travelling by bus, train or plane. You don’t want everyone around you to hear everything going on during a business conversation, and headphones ensure that your meeting remains the members of the meeting.

Types of Headphones

Headphones come in several different varieties. As headphone technology has improved, the sound quality differences has been minimized. These days, some small in-ear headphones produce sound just as rich and deep as a heavy pair of over the ear headphones. Some of the types include:

  • Over-Ear Headphones - These type of headphones are linked above the head and fit over the ear. The idea is that the ears are very close, but not actually touching the headphones. Typically these are very comfortable. High end models will use very comfortable material like velvet for extra softness.
  • Closed-Back Headphones - These are similar and a style of over-ear headphones. These headphones work to block out any additional sound. Musicians have used these during recording for decades.
  • Open-Back Headphones - Similar to the closed-back option, the ear cups are actually open. These are often used by people mixing music so that they can also hear what’s going on around them.
  • In-Ear Headphones - These are very similar to earbuds, but rest specifically in the ear canal instead of the outer ear. Some people find them more comfortable, while others don’t.
  • Earbuds - Almost identical to the in-ear headphones, earbuds sit further outside the ear drum in the outer ear. These are incredibly portable. Like most headphones, they can be cordless or have traditional cords and use a sound jack.

Other Headphone Terms

There’s also a few other common terms that are thrown around in regards to types of headphones. People often speak about “Bluetooth” headphones. These are any set of headphones that can connect to a bluetooth advice, rather than requiring an audio output port. These can be over the ear or earbud/canal styles. Their cordless nature is making them very popular.

There’s also “noise cancelling” headphones. The idea behind these is that as soon as you put them on, there will be no noises from the outside world. These actually work by cancelling out outside noise, rather than insulating the ear. A microphone on the headphones takes in the sound from the environment around people, then cancels it out by creating an opposite frequency. These cancel out as silence. Sound proofing is also often included due to some high frequency sounds.
